Pomaks, Torbesci, Aromuni, Gorani… The Balkans are home to the largest number of ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities in all of Europe. The majority of these ethnic groups are essentially unknown to most. Cyrill Stieger, longtime correspondent for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, is an outstanding expert on the many minorities in the Balkans. He has spoken with descendants of the Wallachians in Istria, met with representatives of the Gorani along the Albanian-Macedonian border, and in his travels has discovered a fascinating but endangered world. “Whoever wants to orient themselves in the intermingling of peoples in the Balkans needs a history, linguistic, historical-ecclesiastical and ethnological knowledge, and, last but not least, must be familiar with the everyday political life of the regions described. Stieger has this theoretical knowledge, and at the same time remained a journalist who, in villages where wolves wish each other good night, knows how to converse with merchants and teachers as well as with farmers and officials.” (NZZ, Andreas Oplatka).

Cyrill Stieger, born in Oberriet, Switzerland, in 1950, studied Slavic philology and Eastern European history in Zurich and Zagreb, then worked at the Swiss Embassy in Moscow. From 1986 to 2015 he was the foreign policy editor and correspondent of Neue Zürcher Zeitung. In 2017 he published his book “Wir wissen nicht mehr, wer wir sind. Vergessene Minderheiten auf dem Balkan”. He now lives again in Zurich.
